Des O'Sullivan, airline pilot with Ryanair discuss his first motorbike.
I'm 42 and married - with two princessess. I always wanted a motorbike when I was growing up but never had the money and my mother wouldn't let me. Started biking four years ago and passed my full licence test a year later. I find it such a stress-free mode of transport, I rarely use the car. My mother still doesn't know!
Your first machine? A 1993 BMW K75RT, a big heavy marvellous brute with loads of space for briefcases and uniforms.
What attracted you to it? Solid, reliable touring bike with good performance. The full fairing is a must for year-round use. The ABS brakes have saved me on more than one occasion.
How much did it cost? €6,730 (£5,300). I sold it for €4,500 last week.
What is your current machine? BMW 1150RT - bought it new this year. Absolutely superb machine. Unbelievable brakes.
What did it cost? €18,300 (£14,400).
What did the insurance cost? €670, from Hibernian.
What do you use the machine for? Daily commuting to work - from Naas to Dublin Airport - and touring on time off.
How much did you spend on gear? Helmet €500 (£400), boots €130 (£100), jacket €630 (£500), trousers €300 (£380), gloves - found them.
What is your next upgrade likely to be? I don't see how they can improve on the 1150RT.
