SECONDHANDSENSE:THE ARRIVAL of a new model of a popular car usually presents a good opportunity to pick up a keenly priced second-hand version of the outgoing one. This should especially be the case with the Opel Astra, the new version of which has its international launch next month.
The Astra has been competing in the most competitive segment of the market since 1992, and has served Opel well in the small family saloon area. Of late, though, it has been ageing, and not terribly well. Its replacement will need to square up to the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf, both of which are still dominant.
Overall, the Astra is a very competent performer. The current model has quite nice lines to it, but you could hardly describe it as distinguished. Squat and solid is probably the best description. It drives well and its handling and ride quality are acceptable, although they are not in the Focus league. Nevertheless, it will serve the average motorist well in terms of overall performance.
The basic 1.4 petrol engine produces 90bhp and is just about acceptable in terms of power. There is a 1.4 diesel option and also a 1.7 diesel. Both diesel are good for economy but they are both unsophisticated. A petrol version is probably the best option for most people. You can also have various body options, including estate and convertible. The Astra has a five-star rating in the EuroNCAP crash test programme and reliability is very good.
Inside the car is very comfortable, with excellent seats. Dials and instruments are practical, although some controls are hard to reach and the main air vents are in the centre of the dashboard area. The boot is a good size but can be hard to load because of car design.
A 2006 1.4 petrol with 21,000km on the clock is on offer for €15,950. A 1.4 diesel of the same vintage with 43,000km is €11,975. A 2007 1.4 petrol with 19,000km is on offer for €14,500 and a 1.7 diesel with 70,000km has a tag of €14,995.
All of these prices are too high – there are lots of Astras out there and they are now showing their age.
