A January debut for the new Land Rover Freelander is a distinct possibility and sales should start late in 2006.
It's clear from the spy pictures we have seen that the new car looks very similar to the existing model. However, we expect that several styling cues from the Discovery 3 and Range Rover will find their way onto the new car.
The new Freelander will use an all-new platform, a stretched version of the same platform that underpins the Ford Focus, Mazda 3 and Volvo S40. In due course, we expect to see a 'baby' Volvo 4x4, the XC50, on the same building blocks.
The new Freelander will feature a stiffer chassis and increased ground clearance. The gearboxes and engines, likewise, have been upgraded.
The car in the pictures is a five-door and suggestions are that this will be the only body style available, with three-door and soft-top versions not being directly replaced. However, rumours persist about a 'baby' Land Rover, positioned below this new Freelander and due for 2008.
