SECONDHANDSENSE: LONGEVITY IS an important element for most people buying second-hand cars these days

SECONDHANDSENSE:LONGEVITY IS an important element for most people buying second-hand cars these days. Andthere are plenty of choices – the best sellers in the market have generally achieved their positions as a result of reliability, writes DONAL BYRNE

But what if you want something more than a Toyota Corolla or a Ford Focus?

The BMW 3 Series with a 1.6-litre engine combines many good qualities. Purists will argue that a BMW with a four-cylinder engine is an unnecessarily restrictive unit for a car capable of much more. But if you want a car that is quite economical, yet has the attributes of a more expensive and performance-oriented alternative, it deserves attention.

With its characteristic rear wheel drive, solid build, comfort and superior cabin design, the 3 Series has a lot to offer the driver who is not committed to very high mileage and who wants something distinctive. It has a respectable 118 horse-power.

The seats are superb, even if the rear is restricted, and the driver and front passenger enjoy an ambience you simply won’t find in any mass-produced car of its size. The dials and instruments are well designed and functional.

It is a good city car, being compact and having a good boot and easy loading. Petrol consumption is a little heavy in traffic but the car has a good overall average.

From 2005 on BMW has been placing much emphasis on its Efficient Dynamics programme, which has greatly improved both consumption and emissions.

You get a good safety package from 2005 on, with extras such as multiple airbags, traction control, stability control and a five-star EuroNCAP crash rating. The 3 Series does not have ongoing reliability issues and recalls have been few and far between in recent years.

A 2006 car with the 1.6-litre engine, 35,000km, side impact protection, multiple airbags, air conditioning and other extras is on the market for €18,900. A 2007 model with even more equipment is on offer for €25,950.

The prices are on the high side, but BMW prices usually are. If you can, look for a car with a full service history.
