DUBLIN 18: €4MThis light-filled and attractive redbrick has plenty of period details, fine reception rooms and lots of green space for a growing family
GLENSTAL, A SUBSTANTIAL detached Victorian house on over half an acre in Foxrock is for auction on April 16th through Lisney with an AMV of €4million.
The five-bedroom, rose brick house with white Tudor detailing is set on the southside of Westminster Road, one of the original avenues of this garden suburb designed in the mid 19th century to attract well-to-do and fashionable Dubliners.
The house has 300sq m (3,230sq ft) laid out over two floors, while an adjoining coach-house was upgraded in 1995 to provide 97sq m (1,044sq ft) of light-filled space with two bedrooms and its own courtyard.
This large but cosy family house has wonderful original details, including arched doors and windows, timber panelling, Art Nouveau anaglypta paper, carved newel posts, and fireplaces bowing to the Arts and Crafts movement. All of the rooms are bathed in light from several windows in each.
The hall door, set at an angle, leads into an amazing panelled hall with patterned mosaic floor, which in turn leads into the main hall carpeted in rich red. A feature of the house is the accommodation for servants to do their work unseen, by means of a separate staircase and corridor. This is concealed behind a door and runs side-by-side with the grand main staircase allowing the kitchen and its offices direct access to the diningroom.
All the main rooms open off around this central hall, including a lovely drawingroom with round bay and French doors to the back garden.
It has a timber Adam fire surround with delicate moulding and windows to either side.
A long diningroom and comfortable study both have original fireplaces and lots of windows.
The kitchen has vaulted timber ceiling and fitted units, Rayburn cooker and square sittingroom off it. There are several spaces off it including a good-sized utility.
Upstairs the five bedrooms are all good doubles, the main one with en suite bathroom and walk-in dressingroom. There is also an attic room with dainty cast-iron fireplace.
Outside, the house is entered through cast-iron gates. A huge cedar tree dominates the terrific front garden and there is gravelled parking for at least 10 cars.
The back garden is reached through another set of gates to the side of the house and is mainly set in lawns, with trees and shrubs. Foxrock village is just up the road and the dual-carriageway nearby.
