Hacketsland House, Shanganagh Road, Shankill, Co Dublin is a 400-year old mansion which has been completely remodelled by its present owner, a builder with eclectic taste and a flair for interior design.

Built around 1600, this unusual and handsome property is completely hidden from the road behind security gates down a tarmacadam drive. It is for sale by private treaty with Ganly Walters quoting £495,000 €628,520).

The refurbishment has included bringing many of the walls back to their original stone, installing timber flooring, building a new staircase, remodelling the kitchen, creating a ground-floor shower room and two first-floor bathrooms, as well as rewiring and insulating throughout.

There is a feeling of stepping back in time as you pass through a wrought-iron gate into a walled garden and walk around to the front of the house. The entrance hall is large, its period teak floor has been stripped and polished and the walls are panelled in deal.

To the right is a pretty sittingroom decorated in shades of white and pale lemon, with a wooden floor and low windows with deep sills. A striking fireplace is tiled in green marble and blue slate, its teak surround topped by a large over mantel - one of the many mirrors included in the sale. On the far side of the hall is a diningroom with raised granite fireplace; interior walls are part exposed to their original granite and brick. Two windows overlook the front garden.

The large kitchen continues the theme of brick, stone and wood to give a rough-hewn country feel. The working area has breakfast counters, a cream, oil-fired Aga and a cooker, both included in the sale. An arch leads into a modern utility section and the whole area is floored in red quarry tiles.

Adjoining the kitchen is a family room with a Chinese slate floor in warm shades of green and rust. It has another large fireplace and is currently furnished with two easy sofas in deep pink. There are patio doors to the rear garden. A modern shower room off the playroom is floored in black slate and has two mirrored walls.

Up a carved and panelled staircase in red deal, there is a gallery landing and five bedrooms, two of them doubles. The main bedroom is decorated in pale colours, with a pitched pine mantelpiece. Its en suite bathroom has a sunken bath as part of a four-piece white suite, a power shower and a ceramic-tiled floor. There are four further bedrooms; one of them has a built-in unit and an unusual corner window. The stylish family bathroom is fully tiled.

The front garden has been landscaped and includes a lawn fringed with trees and shrubs and a stone rockery with pond. A greenhouse is included in the sale, and a storage building would be suitable for conversion.
