Limerick: €1.5m A restored Georgian house by the River Shannon is in a sublime spot, writes Michael Finlan
Along a stretch of the River Shannon close by Castleconnell in Co Limerick, ancient trees reaching skywards from the riverbank watch over a luxuriantly wooded countryside whose Eden-like atmosphere inspired someone way back to call it Worldsend.
It's an evocative name for a place where worldly cares can quickly disappear in a sublime stillness broken only by the song of a bird or the splash of a salmon snapping at flies above the water.
Among the trees in this idyllic setting lies a truly lovely home that was built in the Georgian style more than 150 years ago and has lain there ever since like a concealed treasure. The house also is called Worldsend and it has been transformed into a residence that incorporates every imaginable comfort of modern living.
This magnificent makeover has been carried out with such care that all the charm of the original home, as it stood in the 19th century, has been preserved. It's a striking example of how to bring a mansion from another age up-to-date without compromising its historic origins or architectural integrity.
And Worldsend House has a history that links it with the Shannon flowing alongside its gardens.
Until recently it was the home of the Enright family who became internationally famous as the inventors and makers of the Castleconnell Rod, so highly prized among anglers that even the Tsar of Russia owned one.
Worldsend House came into possession of the present owners in 1996 and they undertook the restoration work that has made it one of the most desirable country homes in Ireland. It is for auction on September 29th through Ganly Walters with a guide of over €1.5 million.
The approach to the house runs along the Shannon outside Castleconnell village, leading to the entrance with a gate-lodge that also has been carefully restored into an attractive residence.
Electronic wrought-iron gates open to a tree-lined avenue curving to the front door of the main residence which looks much like it did when it was first built, only now fresh and rejuvenated. All around, age-old trees tower above seven acres of newly laid-out lawns with a tennis court and gardens ablaze with shrubs and flowers, sloping down to the Shannon.
The main house has a hall, four reception rooms, three bathrooms, a study, office, playroom, wine cellar and laundry. An ambiance of luxury envelopes the spacious main bedroom suite, with double doors leading to a patio, two glazed doors onto a courtyard, a built-in speaker system, an enormous adjoining dressing room and beyond that a marble-tiled bathroom with Jacuzzi, skylight, steam room and separate shower room. The main bedroom suite leads into another room now used as an office cum gym and opening onto the courtyard.
All the other rooms have been similarly enhanced with a tasteful touch of individual luxury. The restored gate-lodge, like the main residence, is a listed building and comprises a hall, livingroom, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
Outside there are three large inter-connecting double garages in stone. For good measure, whoever buys Worldsend will also become owner of part of the River Shannon bed and can get to the waterside by a short stroll down a leafy path. This is a dream property only eight miles away from Limerick city and 112 miles from Dublin.
