River runs by Mia's Laragh cottage home

Actress Mia Farrow is selling her Irish home, a secluded cottage on 19 acres near the village of Laragh, Co Wicklow. Gunne Residential has been appointed selling agent for the five-bedroom cottage, River Run, which is on the market by private treaty at £475,000. Ms Farrow bought the cottage three or four years ago having looked at many properties in Co Wicklow and other parts of Ireland. Located a mile from Laragh, the long low house has a romantic and very private setting. Almost invisible from the road, it is set low in a hilly landscape, surrounded by ancient stone walls and a patchwork quilt of fields. The Avonmore river runs along the bottom of the property, and a small stream rushes by the house on the east side.

A team of workers set about renovating the cottage to an exceptional standard, while keeping plenty of character. The walls are rough plastered and whitewashed, as they might have been in the 19th century but there are four bathrooms. The house is roughly T-shaped and is far larger than it looks at first inspection. Inside, there is around 2,500 sq ft of space on two storeys with a delightful upper floor of children's bedrooms and bathrooms. Floors are terracotta tiled or timber, and there are lots of authentic touches from the wrought-iron window catches to the battered pine furniture and simple iron beds which may be included in the sale.

The front door opens directly into a large kitchen with a terracotta tiled floor. There's a gasfired Raeburn cooker on one side and dresser-style units and open shelving. Off the kitchen is a utility room with industrial style washing machines.

The kitchen opens directly into a large hallway-cum-sittingroom with a huge open fireplace fitted with a solid fuel stove.

From here a staircase leads to the upper floor and rooms lead off in two directions. On one side is a bathroom and bedroom, on the other is a cosy sittingroom, two further interconnecting bedrooms and another bathroom. All the bathrooms are fitted with old-fashioned baths and wash-hand basins.

There are two staircases to the upper floor, one at either end of the long section of the `T'. There are two more bedrooms and a sittingroom upstairs, two of the rooms being connected by a tunnel that tiny children can run through but adults would have to navigate on their hands and knees.

Slanted ceilings and low windows set deep in the walls make this level utterly charming if a little difficult to get around.

The land around the house has not been cultivated, though there is a level area of grass behind the house. Selling agent Robin Palmer intends to market the property abroad and has already contacted a number of wealthy Irish Americans who are in the market for a holiday home here. River Run may also appeal to a Dublin family seeking a totally secluded property within easy distance of the city.
