Plans to develop a multi-storey car park at the rear of the Royal Irish Automobile Club at Dawson Street, Dublin 2, have been rejected by An Bord Pleanala. Dublin Corporation, which had earlier refused permission for the facility, owns a car park a short distance away at Schoolhouse Lane. The proposed scheme by a business consortium and the RAC would have involved the development of 374 car parking spaces and a four-storey over basement clubhouse. The Bord said it was not satisfied there was a need now or in the future for a short term car park in the area. It said the very substantial additional structure proposed would be incompatible with what was a historical area and would have involved the demolition of two listed buildings at 33 and 34 Dawson Street. And the traffic generated by the car park would seriously interfere with the operation of the proposed LUAS system, the Bord said.
