Pretty kitsch

Ok, so no one actually needs a nun shaped candle or a rug made from recycled plastic or even a Hula girl figurine for the dashboard of their car but at least if the urge should come upon you, these and 350 other fun and funky items are now available from Pinkinc, an Irish mail order catalogue.

This newest addition to the ever growing Irish mail order scene is the brainchild of solicitor Thomas Byrne and his wife Michelle Davis who describe themselves as inveterate shoppers. "We wanted to open a shop," says Thomas, "but we have three children so it seemed a bit tricky time-wise and anyway everyone loves getting stuff in the post."

The 33-year-old shopaholic thought of the idea nearly two years ago and since then he and his wife have spent all their spare time going to trade shows and exhibitions, both in America and the UK. For real kitsch, the Dublin based couple knew they had to go to the States, and their catalogue features classic examples of hip home extras such as life size plastic flamingos for the garden (£26) that were invented in the 1950s and never quite went away and Krishna covered vivid metal lunch boxes (£10). The Hawaiian theme in the shoots in their first catalogue and the vivid pink cover gives the not so subtle hint that Pinkinc's main client base will be young people who don't take themselves too seriously. Who else would opt for a string of fairy lights in the shape of the Sesame Street characters (£15) or a door pull that looks like a liquorice all-sort (£56).

Clearly there isn't an enormous range of home produced quirky novelty items because Byrne and Davis could track down very little. They do have a range of fun greeting cards that come with real sweets attached (£6) that are made by an hilariously named company called Eireheads. The company is clearly in the start-up phase, with the couple operating from their own home and indeed several of the product shots were taken in their house.

Byrne admits that they are at a slightly chaotic stage. He works from home as a solicitor and Michelle combines running the business with running the home. Added to that, every room is full of boxes. Even so, the couple are currently planning their next catalogue. "We intend bringing out two a year," says Byrne, "That way no-one will get bored and anyway, wherever we go, we see so much great stuff that there just wasn't room in the first one for everything."
