YOURSPACE:THE HAND-PAINTED cream kitchen of 22 Rathdown Park (see page 4) by Newcastle Design (0404 65000) is toned down country classic without any of the frills that are often associated with these kitchens.
Newcastle Design calls it a Shaker-style flush frame kitchen and it is full of quirky and interesting features like the spice rack at the end of the kitchen which hides a secret door to the utility room and a curved storage press at the end of one wall to enhance the sense of flow in the room.
The worktops are moka quartz with a pencil edge and there are two sinks, one incorporated into the island and another in the main kitchen area. The owners put in two sinks to improve the prep space and because they are “messy cooks” who don’t like to cross each other’s paths in the kitchen. To complete the country look the oven is a Rangemaster dual fuel range with a double oven. The owner went back to a traditional and sturdy cooker after going through the gamut of modern gas cookers over the years.
There are two single dishwashers on either side of the sink, located at a height so you don’t have to bend down.
The kitchen is from €20,000 and the worktops are €3,800.
The Rangemaster range is from €2,500. The Antique Cream Johnstone paint on the walls and cream marble floor tiles from local tile store Italian Stone and Tile in Terenure (01 4924891) continues the neutral colour scheme. The tiles are Crema marfil. The usual price is €100 per sq yd but the sale price is €70 per sq yd for the month of February.
