When the first houses in the Eagle Valley development beside the entrance of Powerscourt House and gardens in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow were built in the mid-1990s, on land sold by the estate, the €250,000 plus selling price seemed pretty steep .

The planning permission to develop the lands was contingent on the restoration of Powerscourt House, which was destroyed by fire in the late 1970s.

Number 63, a five-bed detached house, was built in one of the later phases of the development on an elevated site backing on to the golf course and by the time the final phase of five-bed houses was built in 1999, they were selling for more than £500,00. By the peak of the property boom some of the larger ones went for up to €2 million.

But that was then and this is now and asking prices there have fallen below the €1 million mark for the larger five-bed houses. Number 63 is asking €895,000 through Sherry FitzGerald. While some of the neighbours have extended on one side, Number 63 is still its original size, a not-too-bijou 262sq m (2,826sq ft), but is one of the few houses in this part of the estate that has scope to extend on both sides.

The current owners have been there nine years and have kept the place in immaculate condition.

The front garden is on a slope which makes the house perched on top appear even bigger than it is. The decor throughout is fairly traditional and classical and the owners have turned what was once the hall and a separate reception room into one grand entrance hall with formal seating, oak panelling, fitted bookcases and an antique, cast-iron fireplace.

To the left of the entrance hall is a good-sized livingroom with a marble fireplace which leads to a diningroom and, in turn, to a large conservatory with a yellow-brick bar in one corner, an unusual original feature of the house.

The rear garden backs onto the rough of the Powerscourt golf course.

The raised, slightly sloped lawn behind has a series of pathways and is fringed with tall, mature trees. The garden has a number of interesting areas including one to the side with a trampoline and another with a water feature.

The house comes with a massive double garage to one side which has space for up to four cars as well as a utility room, a shower room which the owners use to wash their dogs, and a substantial upstairs office with storage.
