CONGRATULATIONS TO Yvonne Farrelland Shelley McNamaraof Grafton Architects for getting onto the shortlist of the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award. It's on the shortlist for its Bocconi University building in Milan, which has already nabbed a World Building of the Year award. The announcement will lift the practice's reputation even higher and will, hopefully, carry with it the standing of Irish architecture in general.
Irish practices were also well represented in the 340-strong long list chosen by Architects’ Council of Europe member associations, other national architecture associations and an advisory committee. Practices from these shores included Bucholz McEvoy, Boyd Cody, Architecture53Seven, Dominic Stevens, Hassett Ducatez, MacGabhann, and O’Donnell + Tuomey.
Finalists will be giving a talk on their work on April 22nd and the award will be announced in May. Grafton Architects is up against the Multimodal Centre – Nice Tramway, in France by Atelier Marc Barani; Zenith Music Hall, Strasbourg, France by Massimiliano Fuksas Architecture; Norwegian Opera and Ballet, Oslo, by Snøhetta and Library; and Senior Citizens’ Centre and City Block Core Zone, Barcelona, Spain, by RCR Aranda Pigem Vilalta Arquitectes.
