A late 18th-century flour mill on the River Liffey near Lucan in west Dublin is to be converted into a heritage centre following its purchase by Fingal County Council. The council paid £3.7 million prior to tender for the mill which has water-powered turbines still in working order. There is a handsome period house at one side with over 5,000 sq ft of space. The sale includes a gate lodge and three small islands on the river. The mill was bought in 1860 by Joseph Shackleton and it was owned by that family until 1979 when it was sold to the present owners.
