UNTAMED Co Donegal is an unlikely subject for stylised art deco treatment but a rare 1930s travel poster, right, to be auctioned next week, features "the forgotten county". Christie's will hold a sale of Travel and Vintage Postersin South Kensington, London, next Friday, November 5th.
Among the lots – of mainly British interest – is a striking poster advertising "Donegal for Holidays", featuring Sheephavenby Norman Wilkinson, created for The London Midland and Scottish Railway.
The image evokes the innocence and elegance of pre-War travel and would have made a perfect book cover if Enid Blyton had ever got round to writing Five Have Fun in Dunfanaghy.
Incidentally, Wilkinson, a British marine painter and poster illustrator, is ironically best-known for one of art history’s most famous lost pictures.
His painting, The Approach to Plymouth Harbour, hung in the smoking room of the Titanicand sank with the ship 98 years ago on that terrible night to remember.
