It has been a long battle for residents in Ireland's poshest mobile home park - Ballinacarrig in Brittas, Co Wicklow - but owner Malachy Stone has finally agreed to allow them long leases on their holiday homes instead of 10-year renewable licences. Two years ago, Mr Stone threatened to sell the seaside park from under the residents' mobiles, so to speak, as negotiations over the licences had gotten to a nasty stage. The 88-acre park was developed by Mr Stone in the early 1980s on land that had been in his family for over 200 years. The residents - who include such high-flyers as solicitor Noel Smyth, businessman Jim Flavin, and bookseller Fred Hanna - had been trying to establish a more secure system of tenure for several years, to the annoyance of Mr Stone who attempted to bring matters to a head by putting the park on the block in 1998. However, no buyer emerged at the asking price of £10 million, and Mr Stone went back into negotiations with the 175 residents. He has now agreed to grant them 35-year leases at an annual rent of about £4,000. Residents will also have to pay service charges, so their holiday homes could cost them over £6,000 a year to rent and run. However, mobiles at Ballinacarrig just go up and up in value. A well located mobile here now costs well over £100,000.
