Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has given Treasury Holdings approval for a major residential development at the former Blake's site in Stillorgan through its subsidiary Eltissey Ltd.

The scheme will involve the demolition of all existing structures on the landmark site and the construction of a pedestrian bridge across the Stillorgan by-pass (N11).

Meanwhile, Treasury is still trying to get plans for the redevelopment of the nearby Stillorgan Shopping Centre, the State's oldest purpose-built shopping centre, approved.

A new blueprint for the partial demolition and refurbishment of the centre was lodged with the council before Christmas by Myrmidon, a subsidiary of Treasury Holdings. However, the application was deemed invalid by the council. It is expected that it will be lodged again shortly.

The almost two-acre site called The Hill on the Old Stillorgan Road was once home to Blake's Restaurant. Now the popular Bondi Beach nightclub operates on the site.

Despite 20 objections to the scheme, including one from An Taisce, the council has approved plans for the construction of 215 apartments in a block that will range in height from six to 12 storeys.

The primarily residential scheme will also comprise two restaurants, two retail units, two shops, a public house and gymnasium.

Access to the development will be from the Old Stillorgan Road and some 381 car-parking spaces will be provided as well as bicycle spaces.

The residential element of the scheme will comprise 44 one-bed, 164 two-bed, three three-bed and four four-bed units.
