Altosur Malbec, Tupungato, Finca Sophenia 2003 I suppose we are entitled to expect decent quality from a winery owned by the president of Wines of Argentina, the country's trade body. Roberto Luka doesn't disappoint with this inky, smoky Malbec. From cool vineyards 1,200m into the Andes, it's fleshy and refined, with tasty blackberry and cassis notes and lingering, peppery grip. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Fattoria La Valentina 2003. Sometimes Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can be a bit too rustic for its own good - more of a punch in the mouth than a kiss. That is not the case with this smooth, rich, lively beauty. From an estate that follows organic methods as far as possible, it has strikingly pure flavours and a lovely, juicy lift.
