Mary Downey chooses this week's white and red
Rose Creek Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2004. I've been lukewarm about Lidl, but this recent addition to the wine portfolio offers serious value (as opposed to just a low price - a starkly different thing). Made by Nobilo, a New Zealand giant, it's a typical Marlborough Sauvignon - highly aromatic with grapefruit and green pea flavours and an off-dry finish - except that typical Marlborough Sauvignon prices these days are up to twice as much. Tasty by itself; even better with lightly spiced chicken, pork or vegetable dishes. From Lidl, €8.99.
Domaine de Grange Basse Syrah, Vin de Pays d'Oc 2002. This lipsmacker at a down-to-earth price is the sort of wine that explains in one mouthful why the Languedoc is winning so many new fans. With enticing aromas of dark berries, dark chocolate and spice, it combines a silky texture with rich, punchy flavours and firm tannins. Definitely one to try while the casserole season is still with us. From Mitchell & Son, Kildare St & Glasthule; Bin No 9, Goatstown; Jus de Vine, Portmarnock; French Flair, Tralee, €10.50-€10.95.
