Brazilika Far Out ****
You need an experienced guide before diving into Brazilian music. BBC Radio One DJ Gilles Peterson is probably the best sherpa in this business, as well as a dab hand at Brazilian compilations. His brief here is to celebrate the 15th birthday of Brazilian-British label Far Out, and so the selections are drawn from a back catalogue that houses mainly cool, languid, sophisticated bossa-nova, funk and pop in the main. Peterson has fun leading the listener through the label’s hotspots, with the deep samba of The Ipanemas, the freak-outs of Azymuth and the trippy magic of Aleudas’ Galope very much to the fore. And Peterson keeps the mood at the summery end of the scale throughout. www.farout recordings.com
