The London Session Woodville****
Multi-reedman Alan Barnes chose Mark Nightingale (trombone), Andy Panayi (bass clarinet/tenor/baritone), a John Pearce-Andy Cleyndert-Bobby Worth rhythm section, and co-leader Warren Vaché (cornet) for this above-the- norm mainstream album. The repertoire – eight standards and two originals – has few surprises, but deft writing by Barnes and Nightingale makes skilful use of the septet's colours, bringing the solo talents of an exceptionally strong mainstream-to-bop front line sharply into focus. Vaché, who recalls Ruby Braff, and Nightingale, influenced perhaps by Carl Fontana, are astonishing virtuosi with seemingly limitless powers of invention, and Barnes and Panayi are notably talented soloists. Standouts for fans include
My Funny Valentine, Sophisticated Lady, a Joe Newman blues,
Molasses, and Benny Carter's groover
A Walkin' Thing. See woodville records.com
