The rarely heard music of the reclusive Irish composer Ina Boyle (1889-1967) is the focus of a short tour this weekend. Boyle spent most of her life in her native Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, apart from a spell in London where she studied with Vaughan Williams. Early successes included winning a Carnegie Trust award for her orchestral work, The Magic Harp, and broadcasts on the BBC.
Interest in Boyle's work seems to be picking up. Her Violin Concerto had its first public performance last summer, and this weekend there are concerts featuring mezzo soprano Victoria Massey accompanied by David Brophy in a selection of songs, and the Callino Quartet playing the String Quartet in E minorof 1934.
Later in the week, the new NI Opera company begins a tour of Menotti's The Medium, directed by Oliveer Mears and with Doreen Curran as Madame Flora. (There is a two-for-the-price-of-one offer available until February 9th. Quote "NI Opera 2-4-1 deal" when booking.)
Also this week, the mesmeric Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto begins a tour of Vivaldi's
Four Seasonswith the Irish Chamber Orchestra in Limerick on Thursday.
