THEATREWORKS company brings both eroticism and mythic symbolism to their powerful reworking of Shakespeare's neglected long poem. The story of Venus's doomed love for the "flint-hearted boy" Adonis touches on a great number of fundamental conflicts love and lust, divine and mortal, sacrifice and passion and Michael Caven's sensitive adaptation highlights these superbly. Mythic creatures carry the narrative duties in the style of a Greek chorus, and Liz Schwarz shines as Venus.
