Some weeks back, we tipped the hat to Dublin’s Screen Cinema for its impressive repertory season of vintage movies. The news gets better.

Today marks the launch of a new project by Universal Pictures that brings a series of classics, each reissued in snazzy digital prints, to a range of cinemas throughout the state (well, there’s two outside Co Dublin, anyway). Joining the Screen in D’Olier Street are Movies@ Dundrum, Cineworld Dublin, IMC Dún Laoghaire, Omniplex Santry, SGC Dungarvan and Omniplex Galway.

The season begins today with Stanley Kubrick's mighty Spartacusand continues into November with The Blues Brothers, Scarface, The Thingand Animal House.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Irish audiences to see some of Universal Pictures’ amazing back catalogue of titles on the big screen,” says David Burke, general manager of Universal Ireland. “We look forward to reissuing further timeless classics in 2010. Feedback from our cinema partners has been extraordinary; there’s been phenomenal demand so far.”

Far be it from us to attempt to influence the mighty Universal, but that company does still hold the rights to the greatest series of horror films in Hollywood's history. Reel News would certainly look kindly on a reissue of Bride of Frankensteinor The Old Dark Housein the new year.
