Two by Two By Five

Contemporary dance meets contemporary music in this new work from Daghdha Dance Company and The Crash Ensemble

Contemporary dance meets contemporary music in this new work from Daghdha Dance Company and The Crash Ensemble. Yoshika Chuma, the Artistic Director of Daghdha, describes the piece as an experiment in which each artist is asked to create in isolation. This is quite a risk and results in a stark, minimalist piece, a dance/concert with five duets danced in silence interspersed with four new live musical compositions by Donnacha Dennehy.

Considering the calibre of artists involved, it is a pity they did not find the opportunity to integrate their work fully into a more cohesive performance piece. Nevertheless, this is a challenging work, for performers and audience, and contains many interesting moments.

The dance pieces are mostly concerned with experiments in form, rather than emotional or thematic concerns. Little Love Story is a male/ female duet with strong use of gesture, allowing no contact between the lovers. Trio A is a re-reinterpretation of Yvonne Rainer's seminal post-modern work; however, the clarity of both pieces is not helped by a crowded performance space.

Paul Johnson's composition has a lovely opening where he and dancer Mary Nunan create a hand motif and develop this to refer to former works by Johnson. Both dancers display a sense of calm maturity throughout. Tree: Wind by Terry Creach is a breath of fresh air. This is an attractive male duet with good lifts, use of weight and level changes. The dancers are truly alive in the piece and enjoy dancing together. Dennehy's musical compositions are quite dark, with echoes of Cage, strong use of brass, trombone in particular. Natasha Lohan adds a dash of colour and humour.

The complete piece is quite mathematical in concept; one is watching patterns in time and space. The danger is, maths is not always interesting.
