Susan Tiger is an artist from Philadelphia who moved to Mayo in 1998. Her most recent show in Ireland, at Monster Truck in Dublin, was appositely titled What's an American Artist Doing Not Making Paintings of Landscapes in Co Mayo?The answer is that she was attending to The Shape of Things.

Tiger characteristically works in terms of individual, small-scale images, usually with acrylic and graphite, often with a strongly graphic quality. In these works she focuses on specific details of her environment, or – and this is more difficult to describe – the nature of an habitual routine or line of thought or viewpoint. So her images range from the matter-of-fact and immediately identifiable to the almost mathematically abstract.

Yet they are all accessible, and all seem to be part of the same ongoing conversation about the quality of life and how, individually, we experience things day to day. AIDAN DUNNE
