Skying XL****
Their previous album,
Primary Colours, gave The Horrors a new lease of life. Its dark, enticing, thrilling tracks pulled in and wowed listeners who weren't around when the band were better known for their hair than their songs. While
Skyingemploys some of the flavours that powered its predecessor, there are plenty of other riffs and ruffles to turn heads. What's clear is that The Horrors genuinely don't give a toss what people think and are working to a template that suits them rather than anyone else. Both the outlandish colourful guitar lines on
Endless Blueand the raging, psychedelic hazy synths of
Moving Further Alongsuggest a band who have copped that everyone will eventually follow their lead. Whether they're channelling the more strung-out moments of shoegaze or even Simple Minds in their spacey pomp, The Horrors are reaching for a whole new patch of sky. See thehorrors.co.uk
