IT CAN safely be assumed that many people living in Connacht will have taken exception to Dr Noel Browne's assertion, made in this newspaper yesterday, that "since our State was formed, the arts haven't crossed the Shannon." First off the mark was Madeleine Flanagan of Music for Galway, who rang to remind this column of the sterling work done by that society, which presents 28 events in this season, some of which are unique to Galway.
Forthcoming concerts include trumpeter Mark O'Keefe and pianist Dearbhla Collins on Sunday, the NSOI tour with violinist Hagai Shaham on Tuesday, and soprano Cara O'Sullvan on Tuesday December 3rd. A highlight of 1997 will be a celebration of Beethoven by the American pianist Robert Taub in April. Madeleine points out that, far from being overpriced, concession rates of £5.00 are available for students, the unemployed and OAPs for most concerts. Information from 091.798140.
