NEW MUSIC:You have to wonder just what Rob Murtiff would make of this new Dublin indie-glam outfit stepping out of the shadows. A family court judge in New Zealand, Murtiff took issue with a family last year for calling one of their kids Talulah Does The Hula From Hawaii.
“The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment that this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name,” said Mortiff, before ordering the then nine-year-old child to be placed into court guardianship so her name could be changed. “It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap.”
But the all-girl-and-a- drummer-called-Mike band saw that name as the perfect moniker to encapsulate what they were doing. Featuring ex-members of The Chalets and Neosupervital, Talulah
Does The Hula (from Dublin) are probably the sassiest new entrants of the year round these parts.
While their previous outfits were all too often a case of smart ideas failing to find smarter tunes, both sides of the equation are covered with great panache here.
Sugar-sweet harmonies which soar up, up and away? Check. Swinging, gum-chewing, swaggering suaveness to knock your pop socks off? Check. Sunny-side-up melodies ripped, recycled and respun from beneath the armpits of giants such as The Shangri Las and The Ramones? That would be a darn tooting large check too.
Debut single Bad Boyfriend/Those Girlsis the first place they get to show off these aces. Both tunes pack the kind of nonchalant heat last encountered when biker gangs were roaming retro diners on summer nights in search of cheap milkshakes. We can see the video already.
