Singer-songwriter Randy Newman, cousin of composers Thomas
and David Newman, has carved a hugely successful career as a film
composer with such diverse scoring projects as Cars, Monsters, Toy
Story, Pleasantville and Maverick. His score for Leatherheads, a
period American football comedy, is another winning exercise in
artful pastiche. Drawing from 1920s big- band swing, Harlem blues
and Souza-esque marches, Newman's score is brash and bright,
effortlessly evoking Depression-era America and early Hollywood
romantic comedies while retaining his signature scoring style of
catchy melodies, sparkling colours and polished orchestration. What
Leatherheads lacks in originality, it makes up for with Newman's
best musical quality: his witty charm.
