Yet another Irish religious house will be emptied today when the entire contents of the Christian Brothers' property in Mitchelstown, Co Cork come under the hammer of Charleville auctioneer P.J. O'Gorman.

The brothers were teaching in the town since 1841 - the Chief Justice, Mr Justice Hamilton is among former pupils of their school - and the sale accordingly features lots from former decades such as a collection of more than 300 old 78s.

Solid brown furniture is also inevitably in evidence, notl least a William IV sideboard and a Victorian cabinet bookcase, both in mahogany and with the same estimate of £1,500£2,000.

Another piece expected to make the same figure is a Georgian secretaire bookcase, while a pair of Regency bookcases and a Victorian chaise longue alike have estimates of £1,200£1,500. Other estimates in this sale include: £1,000£1,200 for both a William IV marble-topped centre table and a mid-19th century mahogany-case grandfather clock; £1,000£1,400 for an oak rent table; and £700£1,000 for a Georgian hanging cupboard.
