Sixto Rodriguez's 1969 album Cold Fact is reissued on CD

Chances are that you've never heard of Sixto Rodriguez unless you grew up in Australia or South Africa, or are a fan of David Holmes's mix- albums. Originally released in 1969, this debut album from the son of Mexican immigrants living in Detroit received nada attention, forcing Rodriguez to take up jobs in schools and on building sites to make ends meet. Strangely, the album did take off in South Africa, and Rodriguez pulled big crowds when he eventually toured there. Holmes used Sugarman on his Come Get It, I Got It mix-album in 2002, but it's taken until now for Cold Fact to get a reissue. There's much to admire in how Rodriguez teases and embellishes hazy folk- funk street protest songs by gently adding fringes and flourishes to their bare bones. By turns psychedelic, dark and deep, Cold Fact is yet another album to remind you of how much buried musical treasure is waiting to be rediscovered. www.sugarman.org JIM CARROLL
