New intensive pig and poultry farms will have to apply to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for integrated pollution control licences from September 3rd.

However, this requirement will not apply to all existing intensive farming operations, some of which have been implicated in causing water pollution.

Regulations made by the Minister for the Environment, Mr Howlin, also extend EPA licensing to fossil fuels.
