Only a few world-class performers have emerged from the Irish jazz scene. One of them is Dubliner Christine Tobin. Based in London for many years, Tobin has followed a studiously personal path as a singer and songwriter that has won her the kind of accolades bestowed on only a few, including comparisons with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.
This rare and thoroughly personal artist is, as the comparisons suggest, a one- off, and this week and next she’s back for an extended tour here with a trio that includes the outstanding guitarist Phil Robson.
ALSO worth noting, in these days of cutbacks in arts funding, is that the enlightened sponsorship of jazz by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Co Council continues with its autumn series in Cabinteely House, where guitarist Joe O’Callaghan premieres a suite of original pieces to be performed by a jazz quintet next Thursday.
