The Lambert banner, synonymous with puppetry in Ireland, is currently flying over the Gaiety for twice-weekly morning shows, in which Paula Lambert's company is presenting a double bill. The small puppet theatre sits neatly into the main stage, isolated by lighting and its own magnetism.
First out is Bosco and the Dinosaurs, a lively snippet about maternal dinosaurs and their reproductive traumas. There is a villainous egg-thief, thwarted by Bosco and the audience, who greatly appreciate the minor vulgarities of egg-laying.
Then comes Jacqueline and the Beanstalk, the feminist version of the familiar fairy-tale. It follows the usual lines, Daisy the cow, beans, castle, giant and the triumph of the flaxen-haired heroine over adversity.
It is all expertly done, whipping audience participation to a frenzy short only of storming the stage. I left with the thunderous approval of over 200 tots ringing in my ears; a verdict I dare not quarrel with.
Continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30 a.m. until June 18th. To book, telephone: 01-6771717
