THE best one of the day at next Thursday afternoon's sale of Irish pictures at Christie's in London is expected to be achieved by the above 1910 Orpen self portrait. Carrying an estimate of £150,000-£250,000, its eventual figure will provide a useful benchmark for Sotheby's, which is selling another Orpen self portrait in its Irish picture sale a week later.
Also worth watching out for at Christie's are a handsome Breton interior by Roderic O'Conor (estimate £30,000-£50,000), a typical Osborne rural landscape - painted in 1893-94 at the now urban Foxrock, Co Dublin - which is expected to make £80,000-£120,000, and a number of Jack B. Yeats oils. They include his 1924 work High Spring Tide (Rosses Point, Sligo), which has an estimate of £60,000-£100,000.
