MULLEN'S sale next Monday evening has a good selection of Continental furniture, as well as Edwardian and Victorian pieces, but the top lot is likely to be a 19th century Irish, carved giltwood mirror with an elaborately carved frame, decorated with scrolls, fans and ho ho birds. It appears to be in very good condition and it should have little trouble reaching its top estimate of £7,000.
A Georgian mahogany bureau bookcase, dating from around 1800, and which has glazed doors with square barring, is one of the more handsome, plain pieces of furniture on offer. It has an upper estimate of £3,000. For those who prefer paler and more elaborate pieces, there are several good lots an English walnut rosewood and marquetry side cabinet, c1880, has a top estimate of £6,500; a pair of 19th century French bombe commodes, the sides decorated with brass figure heads, could make up to £3,500; and an elegant 19th century satin wood inlaid mahogany bonheur du jour is estimated at £2,400-£2,800.
A Georgian satinwood bow Pembroke table, crossbanded in rosewood, is valued at £3,000-£4,000; a pair of demi lune mahogany side tables with satinwood string inlay is estimated at £2,000-£3,000, as is a pair of satinwood painted demi lune tables, decorated with flowers, swags and bows.
Around 250 lots will be auctioned, including paintings, sofas and side chairs, and a wonderful Georgian wing backed chair, upholstered in leather, which would be a good buy at its lower estimate of £800.
