Opera Ireland continues its mix-and-match policy of presenting seasons which couple operatic staples with works that are new to its repertoire. The upcoming staple, opening on Saturday, is Mozart's Don Giovanni. It comes to Dublin in a production from the Monte Carlo Opera directed by Jean- Louis Grinda and designed by Rudy Sabounghi. The Don Giovanni and Leporello are the Austrian brothers Paul Armin and Peter Edelmann, whose father was the distinguished bass baritone Otto Edelmann. Cork soprano Cara O'Sullivan makes a long-overdue return as Donna Anna, and the Zerlina is Japanese soprano Mari Moriya, a big favourite with Opera Ireland audiences.
OI's artistic director Dieter Kaegi is taking on the direction of the lesser-known work, Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa, with Sabounghi also designing this production. The title role is taken by Valeri Alexeev, with Dublin-born soprano Sinéad Mulhern (with Vsevolod Grivnod, above) making her company début in the role of Maria. David Brophy conducts the Don Giovanni, Alexander Anissimov the Mazeppa.
