CORALINE ****
Directed by Henry Selick.
Voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Ian McShane

An ignored child discovers a portal to a world that looks like her own, but where the humans all have buttons for eyes. Selick’s wonderful stop-motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s children’s novel is the sort of film that scares highly strung parents while delighting their more blase infants. The two-disc edition features a 3-D version and four pairs of specs.
KATYN ****
Directed by Andrzej Wajda.
Starring Maja Ostaszewska, Artur Zmijewski, Andrzej Chyra, Jan Englert

The 1940 Katyn massacre, in which the Russian NKVD murdered several thousand Polish soldiers, is the subject of this moving, angry film by one of Poland’s masters. Wajda offers a horrifying account of the massacre itself, but the attempt to cover all personal stories is a little less successful. A fine work nonetheless.
