Cork's ambitious annual celebration of contemporary visual culture, Intermedia, will be unleashed on the city from next Saturday, May 1st. Co-ordinated by visual arts officer, Fiona Kearney, for Triskel Arts Centre, the festival focuses on the connections between film, visual art, music and literature, and is a showcase for video, installation, sound and performance art. International artists - including UK performance artist Robert Ayers, US film-maker Lawrence Bowse and sound artist Max Eastley - will work alongside Cork-based artists. Tobin St and Lavitt's Quay will be transformed by site-specific work, while Mick O'Shea will install fibreglass swimming figures in the River Lee. There are also one-day events such as "Radicles", involving CD-ROM and video installations, and an education programme, "Collaboratories". The titles may be a little off-putting, but on the basis of previous years, it's worth swallowing semantic squeamishness for this eye-opening month.
