Star never quite shook the '60s

Farewell, Susannah York

Farewell, Susannah York. Though she did turn up in Supermanand won best actress at Cannes in 1972 for Robert Altman's Images(filmed in Ireland), York, who has died at the age of 72, was one of those actors who, in career terms, never quite escaped the 1960s.

From Tom Jones(1963) to her Oscar-nominated performance in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?(1969), York helped define the decade that swung. Less sultry than Julie Christie, less intense than Vanessa Redgrave, York had a presence that never failed to warm the heart (even if, as in Horses, she was dancing herself to death). We'd like to have seen more of her.
