The Gloaming have gone viral since their astounding debut at the National Concert Hall last August. Anchored by east Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and Cúl Aodha sean nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, this quintet is bolstered by the eerie Hardanger fiddle lines of Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Denis Cahill’s pin-prick guitar and the expansively fluid piano lines of Vermont native Thomas Bartlett. An outtake from that memorable Earlsfort Terrace concert was available as a free download with The Ticket a fortnight ago, so that elusive, otherworldly soundscape The Gloaming have created may have further penetrated the collective subconscious in recent weeks. Add special guest (and Bartlett’s childhood friend) folk newcomer Sam Amidon and you’ve got a stellar line up to savour. Lateral-thinking tradition – a contradiction in terms? Far from it.
