Sean Jones – former lead trumpet with Wynton Marsalis's Jazz at the Lincoln Centre orchestra and more recently stand-in for Miles Davis in the tribute group led by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter – is a trumpeter from the heart of the American acoustic tradition. His playing puts him in a direct lineage that stretches back through Marsalis and Miles to Roy Elridge and ultimately Louis Armstrong. His 10th album for Mack Avenue is a back-to-basics recording, with his long-standing group, including pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire. At a time when some may feel that acoustic music is starting to loose ground (again), Jones's open blowing music is a beacon of hope and a reminder that the heart of the tradition still beats hard. seanjonesmusic.com
