The intimacy of the session, the untrammelled pace of the céilí and the intricate curlicues of the song are brought into sharp relief again this year at Ballyferriter’s Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh. Imagine jostling for space among some of the country’s finest traditional musicians and singers in the confines of a village with three pubs (and a hotel), and then trailing them, pied piper-like, from session to session, tunes begetting tunes along the way. That’s how west Kerry’s Scoil Cheoil conducts itself – with the minimum of fuss and the maximum of pleasure.
This year’s guests include Dublin fiddler Liam O’Connor and his father, flute player Mick (pictured); The Four Star Trio; various members of the Begley clan; Scots singer Allan Henderson and Cúl Aodha sean nós singer Máire Ní Cheilleachair. A boutique event in rainbow colours.
