Romance is almost dead

This weekend marks the end for renowned alternative club night Ballroom of Romance

This weekend marks the end for renowned alternative club night Ballroom of Romance. Their last gigs will take place tonight and tomorrow at The Lower Deck in Dublin.

Promoter and co-founder Allen Blighe, who helped set up the club in 2002, said the Ballroom’s initial objective was to provide “an honest reflection, warts and all, of at least part of the music scene in Dublin and Ireland as a whole. And I think it achieved that in its eight-year, 100-night span.

“It seems the right time to end it by choice – on a nice round number – rather than being pushed out of it some time in the grim future.”

As well as numerous local bands, the club has been involved in bringing a host of international acts to Dublin, including Josh T Pearson, Blood Red Shoes and Lite. They have also hosted Japanese band Electric Eel Shock, who will headline tonight’s gig alongside Bob Slayer, The Dudley Corporation and Hounds. Tomorrow, Irish band Legion of Two play with Dinah Brand and Glimmermen. ballroomofromance.com
