Due to the merry chaos that is St Patrick’s Day, this week is actually quieter than usual, but we’ll soldier on with the lowdown on Irish acts dipping their shamrocks into their pints over the weekend.
First out of the traps is Meteor Choice Award winner Jape (Whelan’s, Dublin, tonight); quickly followed by Juliet Turner (left, Seamus Ennis Cultural Centre, The Naul, tonight); Last Days of 1984 (Academy, Dublin, tonight); and Jinx Lennon (Spirit Store, Dundalk, tonight).
Tomorrow sees Le Galaxie (below left) play a special Paddy’s Day gig (Twisted Pepper, Dublin) with a strong support bill as well as a feast of cult Irish movies. Sunday delivers a showcase evening event for Reekus Records as label mates Saccade (above far left) and Keith Moss make moves to influence people (Stag’s Head, Dublin). Further on into the week sees Dublin hip-hop bloke Lethal Dialect spit out the rhymes (Whelan’s,Thursday).
On the folkie side of things, tonight Christy Moore gigs in Kerry (INEC, Killarney) and Johnny McEvoy (far left) breaks sweat (but not as much as Christy, obviously) in Wicklow (Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray).
So Happy St Paddy’s Day weekend – enjoy your shamrock responsibly!
