What exactly are we going to do about Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta? Four years on as Lady Gaga and we’re still dithering: is she an electro-pop-banger genius or simply an art concept looking for a decent home?
We first watched Gaga go through some very silly arty moves in the 02 a few years ago – just her, a debut album and a nonsense storyline about the deliriousness and pressures of fame. Strip away the trappings, however, and you have a songwriter of no small talent.
It’s the songs that count the most, of course; while Gaga might be on a mission to fuse the commonality of pop with high-end notions of fashion, design and conceptual art, it’s on the radio and in the clubs that she hits the hardest. We can laugh at her meat dress (she wasn’t the first to do this, by the way), but we can only nod the head in respectful appreciation to the great pop of, among other tunes, Paparazzi, Poker Face, Just Dance, Born This Way and Edge of Glory. For all of that, however, we suspect tickets will stillbe available for this ambitious open-air show.
