Brownswood Bubblers Five, Brownswood,****
Brownswood is Gilles Peterson’s label, the latest staging-post for the BBC Radio One DJ, Talkin’ Loud founder and long-standing champion of new sounds. The Bubblers compilations are Peterson’s health checks on the state of the underground. This year’s compilation features a few familiar names – no surprise that Peterson has caught the DâM-FunK bug or that he’s digging Sa-Ra dude Shafiq Husayn – but it’s the sounds produced by newer, less heralded names that set the tone. Trilogy’s Brother Don’t Cry is a beautiful delicate electronic torch-song, Electric Wire Hustle’s They Don’t Want sets a few epic agendas, Ron Basejam piles on the slow- motion jazzy pressure and Ragen Fykes represents more of that new beat surrender from Los Angeles. The sound of what 2010 will sound like round Peterson’s way. myspace.com/ brownswoodrecordings
