Causers of This, Carpark ***
It will be interesting to see if the vogue for hazy, out-of-focus electronic indie has the legs to see out 2010. In the past few months many have come, spun nostalgic webs and then found themselves sucked into the pack. South Carolina one-man band Chaz Bundick is the latest Animal Collective/Panda Bear fan to put his slowburning, lo-fi dream-pop odysseys and grooves on the table.
Causers of This, though, creates a stir by pushing the boundaries deeper and wider through head-nodding hip-hop sensibilities (the spirit of J Dilla's back-catalogue is invoked once more) and a wash of sunlit, slow- motion house to the proceedings. Bundick is at his best when he ignores the woozy weaves of sound in favour of more direct and dynamic tracks such as Frank Love. We'll soon know if Bundick has the wherewithall for the long haul, as he's promised a second album by year's end.
