Every Step's a Yes

You don’t buy an album by Isle of Wight pop daydreamers The Bees to hear a vision of the future. Instead, each of their three albums to date has seen them doing a steady line with 1960s/70s pop and psychedelia. While many who engage in similar backwards glances are prone to pastiche (see the entire Oasis career, for instance), The Bees rarely fall into that trap. On their fourth album, they use a pick and mix range of influences, from Simon and Garfunkel-like melodies to classic Beatles wig-outs, to enhance and underline sturdy songs. I Really Need Love is the keeper here, a sunny-side-up tune that has a flourish of sitar and a large dash of Love to give it some bounce, but you’ll also dig the lovely harmonies on
Silverline
and the lush, slow-motion drag of
Winter Rose
